Cannot get reinstall cd to work

long story short...
1. computer automatically downloads windows update
2. computer get stuck on windows screen
3.  It THINK I fix problem by renaming cdr_4.sys file to stop a confilct in safe mode
4. computer now boots ok,,,,EXCEPT cd/dvd are no longer recognized
5. I then try to fix it by repairing Windows using the Dell  Reinstallation MS Windows XP SP1 disk
6. System starts process except now it says "the file asms on Windows XP SP1  cd is needed.  Type the path where the file is located and then click ok.  It cannot find the file

Copy files from:    globalroot\device\cdrom\I386

I think I found the REAL solution to the problem in line 2 but I cannot get out of setup for XP
It keeps going back to it after I reboot

Any ideas?

I had a similar problem once.  Sounds like you have an incomplete Installation started.  I had to format the disk in a different PC to get rid of it.  Then, of course, I had to reinstall Windows AGAIN...

Perhaps you could place the harddrive in another machine and delete the Set-Up files?  That's not something I've done before, but maybe...?

After 2 weeks it was figured out.  Here's all that I tried before getting a solution.  First let it be known that all  I REALLY needed was to at least copy family pictures off of the documents and settings.  THen I would be fine just re-doing the hard drive.

1.  I ran Knoppix (live linux cd to transfer files with a jump drive).  That worked except the pictures were distorted when transferred to windows

2.  Then removed the hard drive and ran it as an external on another PC.  That worked except the windows would not allow permission to THAT specific directory

3.  tried copying the files in DOS (not accessible)

4.  Finally when the error poped up a friend came up with the idea to direct the PC to the c:\ drive to search for the missing ASMS file.  After doing this, about 30 other files had the same error.  We just kept replacing the path with c:\i386 to find the file.  This actually worked!

The system still has the original cd problem.  However I am now able to transfer files to the jump drive and I will just do a re-format.

I hope this helps anyone in the same predicament
