Cannot get updates from Windows update site

Question

Recently I have been having difficulties with getting updates from microsoft's site for some reason. It stalls when it says 'checking for the latest version of the Windows update software' and when I try to refresh the page, it stalls at the exact same spot as before. I have tried to open the ports but to no avail. Please help me with this problem if you can.

I don't have Zone Alarm as my firewall. I have McAfee Internet Suite. Sorry I forgot to tell you that in my first post. What else should I do?

Did you try shutting down ZA and then try Windows Update?

i don't know if this will help.. i have some problems with some links to the windows updates website.. here is the link:

you could try to check your firewall settings.. you have to allow "svchost.exe" (generic host process)-TCP-outbound for the windows updates to work.. (with the default settings for the mcafee firewall, it might not be necessary for you to manually "allow" "svchost.exe" TCP-outbound since the default settings may already be set to allow that)
