Just for the fun of looking, if there's a windowupdate entry in your host file, delete it :)
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

This may help with the specific error you cite.
When you go to the Windows Update site what message(s) are displayed? What errors are shown in the Windows Update.log file on your hard disk?
