Cannot install Logitech SetPoint software

I got my new Dimension 9200 together with the Logitech MX3000 cordless keyboard and mouse.

They work, but I cannot install the SetPoint software (on Vista) that was in the package.

I tried twice with the same result: when booting I get an error message that SetPoint cannot be started and then I have to cancel it.

That's annoying since there are so many features that I cannot use without that software running.

Perhaps the version on the CD was an older version.

Uninstall the one you have now, and download the latest version from the Logitech website.

Logitech has an updated version of Setpoint on their website for Vista that will load properly.  Everything looks normal on the setpoint console, but my MX1000 mouse does not behave very well.  The features seem to work, but the pointer just randomly jumps off the screen to the edge or top.  You can just be moving the pointer to a link, and it will mysteriously jump to the edge of the screen.  It happens a lot and was just too annoying to continue using.  I am using the basic Dell mouse supplied with the system until I can learn more about the problem.  This wired basic mouse is a pain to work with, but at least it does work.

Fing....I wish it were that simple, but the receiver is right in front of the mouse about a foot away as it has always been.  It worked fine until two days ago when I set up this new XPS410 system with Vista Home Premium installed.  The only thing different on the desktop is the monitor.  I went from an older 17" Dell digital flatpanel to a new 20" Ultra Widescreen, and now the cursor has become erratic and just randomly jumps off the screen.

rupa, Try relocating the receiver for your mouse to another place on your desk. Something may be messing with the signal.

That could be caused by the video driver, VISTA video drivers are not totally stable yet.

Audio and video drivers will impact the whole system. Till they mature expect little bug's with things. It will take the vendors a few months to work the little buggies out of drivers. Between DX10 and VISTA API's the vendors have to learn a new game for there drivers.

That is why i am waiting till they get fixed. Same thing happened with XP, win2k.......in my opinion 99% of the issues with VISTA are driver related, mainly video and audio.

You could try it in safe mode Rupa to see if it's drive related. Better yet, try it in WinRE

I think I found the answer on the Logitech website.  The exact problem I am having was described and it has nothing to do with Vista.  Of all things, it is most likely the USB functionality.  The MX1000 apparently can have problems when using a USB port, but is OK if used on a PS/2 port.  I have always used it on a PS/2 port in my old system, but the new XPS410 doesn't have any PS/2 ports.  They list a number to call and are seemingly offering to replace it if it is having this problem, and is within the 3 year warranty period.  That was sure a pleasant surprise! They must have had problems with some of the early MX1000's.

I just wanted to close this out on a high note.  Called Logitech today and they are sending me a new MX Revolution, because the MX1000 has been discontinued.  My MX1000 was still within the 3 year warranty so they are sending me a new top of the line mouse without any fuss.  What refreshing customer service.

You'll love the Revolution. Just purchased one last week.

And you're absolutely right - Logitech customer service is excellent. I've dealt with them a few times and their response is very timely and very professional.
