Cannot install Service Pack 3
I have a Dell Dimension 4700 Series computer running Windows XP. I've tried to install Service Pack 3 a couple of times, but the install gets about half way and the computer locks up. No error message, nothing. The install problem fixes on the Microsoft site don't seem to apply to my situation. Anyone have any ideas on how I can get the service pack to install?
Thanks,
Gary

If you are installing it from Windows update, I advise not to do that, but to download, save to your hard drive the full installation package from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en
or you can get a CD from Microsoft, see links for your region in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389
Then you can be in proper control to install it.
Alkso make sure your PC is free of viruses/malware, etc. Make sure your AV is up to date, scan your PC. Also if you do not hasve them, get Spybot S&D and/or superantispyware (both free), install, update, scan.
Spybot from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Superantispyware from: http://www.superantispyware.com/
EDIT Flooby posted wile I was typing.

I'd suggest ordering the CD and trying it that way. See the appropriate link to obtain the CD at the page above. Alternatively, downloading the entire SP3 file from MS and running it locally has worked for some folks. For some reason, the Windows Update routine has been persistenly troublesome for some users - not a real good PR thing for MS, and I'm surprised they haven't figured out how to resolve this yet.
