Cannot modify zip folder content with Windows XP

I have a file that was created on another system with WinZip.  When I got my new Dell system with Windows XP, I found that it could read and open the file.  If I attempt to modify the content of the file, however, I get the message:

      "Cannot create the for file."

The first "blah-blah-blah" references a temporary directory that it is trying to create to hold the second thing (the second blah-blah-blah is the file I modified).

I checked the permissions in my temporary directory (c:\documents and settings\jeff\local settings\temp) and it was READ-ONLY.  I tried modifying this (and seemed to be successful) -- but apparently Windows XP has some external security framework that modified the permissions back.

I would like to know how to modify my zip file content, but more importantly, I would  think my own temp file should not be read-only!  Is this correct?  Does anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks in advance, Jeff

See if this works: Right click on the Zip file and select "extract." Extract it to the location of your choice and then try to modify the files in the extracted folder.

Thanks for the reply ...

Yes, that works fine.  I'm even able to navigate to the same folder and create the same file and directory names manually.

I guess I just expected to work something like WinZip (no manual intervention to update the zipped folder).

Personally, I would recommend installing WinZip on your Windows XP system, if that is what you're used to using.  I tried using the zipping system that is in XP, but it does not have the features that WinZip does.  My $0.02.
