Cannot run Windows update or any troubleshooters

Not sure if this is the correct Forum? PC is Precision T5500 O/S is Windows 7 Pro I have tried many online forums incl Microsoft. Problem seems to be caused by 'Cryptographic Services failed to initialise The Catalog Database.' The ESENT Error was 583.

I am 'second user' of this machine & do not have any backup disk or Repair partition. All online suggestions have failed & various repair programs, Regcure etc have not worked.

I am considering  Reinstalling Windows Pro but only have an OEM disk from another machine can I do this & use the Product ID from this machine.

Machine was purchased from a supplier in Germany but has Dell warranty from UK expiring next month.

Product Tag is .

Any suggestions or thoughts please

I think I have finally got somewhere, I found an answer on Microsoft support an item about setup unable to configure on this computers hardware. As I suspected it is the Intel software needing updating to allow windows 7 to install. Not a problem if service pack 1 is installed. See kb/2466753  Need to download & install on removeable drive & install as part of windows 7 clean install.

Now just got to install all my stuff.

fingers crossed certainly windows updates have started installing.

Tujags,

Did you recently install/reinstall/upgrade the operating system?

Try reading...

Windows Updates fail to install

It explains how to repair Windows Updates. Re-registering the dlls works but a restart may be needed.

Tujags,

Restart the computer and press F12 at startup Run the full diagnostics. Report back any error messages.

Re-registered the dll's OK but still can't get windows update or troubleshooters to run.  Troubleshooters error code is 0x8ESE0247

source Engine.

Tried to start Windows Defender got the same error code.

Online forums point to problem with Intel rapid storage technology but I don't know if this machine has it installed?

Everything I try has the same report  'a problem prevented the troubleshooter from starting' error code as above.

I tried a clean install of Windows 7 Pro but it failed at the last fence message to say Setup 'could not configure windows to run on this hardware'  As win 7 pro was already installed how can this be? I really am beginning to lose the will to live!!

Rick

That was a long test several hours, result was no problems, there are no warning triangles in the Device Manager listing, various registry checkers/repairers show no problems.

But it still freezes after about 5 mins after first login reboot & login again no problem. still troubleshooters, Skype, Windows update don't run. It is frustrating that windows does not display the 'problem' that it reports causes the run failures. Event Manager shows the Cryptographic Services/Catalog Database failure ESENT error 583. I really can't fathom why the Windows clean install fails.

Regards

Keith

Keuth,

Seems strange. Create a new unrestricted user account and see if that works. Thinking that maybe your user account may be corrupted.

Hi Rick

I created a new Admin account & tried to run Windows update sadly I got exactly the same message. that update is not running you may have to restart your computer.

Checking in Administration tools & update is running,

Application log continuously show the Cryptographic Services failed to initialize the Catalog Database. The ESENT error was:-583

Log Name Application Source CAPI2 Event ID: 257

I found this on Windows Technet but I don't feel happy about trying it

Now it is showing!

I think I have reached the point that I have had enough I think it is time to contact the supplier - unfortunately in Germany - to arrange for a replacement PC I have spent 2 weeks trying to sort it out, bought software that claims to cure all - but not this problem. It really is crazy the machine passes every test with flying colours but still doesn't work properly.  Very inconvenient if I have to return it transport between here & Germany is not fast & I need a computer for various projects I will have to fall back onto a slow Laptop a very frustrating experience!  If you can think of any other possible solutions.......
