Cannot save & recover Microsoft word documents since recent updates.

Ever since we loaded the recent updates all of our old saved word documents under "My Documents" have become "Not Available" and show minimal bites. Also, cannot save or access new word documents. We get "file NORMAL (global template) already exists, do you want to replace?" If we say "no" it keeps looping back to the screen. If we say "yes" we can get back to the the desktop. Please, can anyone help? We run Windows XP.

What updates? XP or Office updates?

Automatic XP updates.

Exit Word and search your HD for the file "normal.dot" (without the quotes). Be sure to include system and hidden files in the search. Delete every copy of normal.dot you find. When you launch Word again, it'll recreate normal.dot. Hopefully that will fix the problem.

Found & deleted "normal.dot" files - didn't fix problem.
Repaired/reinstalled original Microsoft Word 2002 - didn't fix problem.
Open for anymore suggestions - at dead end now.

If you have Norton, you may want to go into its settings options and turn off scanning of Office docs before they can be opened.
