Cannot shut off programs thru MSconfig? Inspiron 5150

I'm trying to shut off programs that I do not need to start up (ex:real audio player, dell quick set) thru MSconfig... when I "run" msconfig & uncheck the boxes...the same programs I unchecked --  start again after a restart  Inspiron 5150 --- 14 months old.  It takes 73 seconds to shut down & 85 seconds to finish starting up    ?????  Ed

remover454,

If you are clicking "Apply" after unchecking the items you may wish to use the little freeware utility here to manage the unwanted programs.

Hi Denny I tried  your  little freeware utility.... not sure where to un-zip it so I made a folder & unzipped it in there & ran the tool.... nothing happend ...went back into msconfig unchecked boxes hit apply & ran the tool... the boxes I unchecked ...the programs still come back up on the taskbar?

Bootup time is now till the desktop icons appear is 1 min. & 22 seconds. I sent you an email

                      regards Ed

remover454,

Go to Start|Control Panel and double-click Startup. That will open a dialog on which you can specify what you wish to block from loading at startup.

remover454,

Unzip the downloaded file which will extract a file called StartupCPL.exe. Double-click that file and the control panel applet will be installed into your Control Panel.

remover454,

Sure, but your earlier email never got here.

In addition to the utility you can always get rid of the entries by the brute force method. See this.
