" I do not have the original or a copy of the setup CD"

You will need this to repair the installation, in the mean time run the Dell diagnostics extended tests, you may have a failing hard drive.

to do anything more than the dignostics, you will need the XPsp2 CD.

You will have to remove the hard drive and install it in another PC as a secondary hard drive, and see if windows can recognize the drive and its contents. If it cannot, the hard drive is dead, replace it.

Thanks Mombo... Its a sata from a laptop and I hooked it up to my desktop with no problems...I can see the entire contents of the drive....I did not catch the beginning of start up but it was repairing something for about 15 minutes before it finally booted up...not sure what that is ....anyway Ill await your next instructions....whether or not it can be fixed or if I need to copy the contents and reformat..or whatever your bigger brain tells you I should do... thanks kanman

Copy off any data you cannot afford to lose, then put it back in the other PC, see if it boots into Windows.

This was Windows doing a chkdsk on that drive automatically, because the drive's file system was detected as corrupt. Hopefully this corrected the issue you were having and now the drive is bootable in the original system.

I returned the HD to the original system and tried to start it again...but I still get the same error.... Wish I had not though.... Now I have it put back on as a drive on my machine but I cant see anything inside it....I get the message that the drive is not formatted yet.... Any ideas? Thanks kanman

Did you copy the data when you had the chance?

No I did not... stupid i know....... my desk top is running a ide drive and this is connected by a sata cable... is there a problem with that is the sata drive going to be a slave...i went into bios and it does not call it a slave just another drive...if that that is ok then I guess i need to try and repair the windows installation on the sata drive ....should I do it in the lap top with my XP CD or can i repair it on my desktop.... I would guess the laptop...just thought Id ask though... I can use kill disks NTFS file reader and see the contents of the sata drive when I boot up on that floppy disk on my desk top machine... thanks kanman
