Thanks, chuket. The solution provided has a small problem but I was able to go around it. Here's how for the benefit of those having the same problem: I'm using WinXP Home SP, so the applicable part of the solution is:

Solution 2: Change the sharing permissions, and then install Acrobat. (Windows XP Home Edition)
1. Choose Start > Run, type %allusersprofile% in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Right-click the Shared Documents folder, and choose Properties.
3. Click the Sharing tab, and then select Share This Folder.
4. Click Permissions, and then select Everyone from the Group Or User Names section.
5. Select Allow next to Full Control in the Permissions section and then click OK. (For more information on changing permissions, see Windows Help.)
6. Click OK to close the Shared Documents Properties dialog box.
7. Install Acrobat.

The only problem is at step #4, there is no such thing as Permissions in WinXP Home. The Home edition has two check boxes: Share This Folder On The Network and Allow Network Users to Change My Files. Both of these boxes need to be checked.

I can understand how the second checkbox needs to be checked (otherwise it's read-only. But, I'm root and I should be allowed to override default settings with my root password.) But the first checkbox? I'm not accessing the folder remotely, but locally.  Windows is weird, sometimes.
