Can't access Windows Update pages
Can someone help?
A new dem 2400 700=RAM. The original bootup was May 16th.
I have never been able to get XP updates.
Email support from Dell was just another Windows page. Tried all of the recommendations. None helped.
Thanks,
JohnBoy1a

Could you please better explain what you mean that you can't get Windows updates? What exactly happens when you try? Have you tried just going to the Windows update site - http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp ? You say you've tried all of the recommendations, but we have no idea what these recommendations are - could you tell us what you've tried?

The recommendations were to kill a couple of files, one was the iuctl and and another file.
Then it recoommended going to Microsoft and downloading new ActveX controls. I completed the deletion part, but could not find any active X control files on Microsoft.com.
I still have about five days to return the computer if I can't solve the problem. While I am not a computer expert, I have had a home computer since the mid-1980s.
This is my fourth XP-based computer. The others were HPs and EMacines. Maybe I should have settled for a lesser machine that I would not have any troubles with.
Thanks for your response. I hope I can find a solution. This machine runs like a rocket.

If you go to Windows update and ask it to scan your PC, it will download the required active X components needed (click yes if prompted to do so; I think the prompt does not mention active X but that is what it is about). In IE tools, internet options, security tab, internet zone, custom, check that under active X check to see that 'download signed active X controls' is set to prompt or enable, 'run active X controls and plugins' is set to enable, 'script active X controls marked safe for scripting' is set to enable.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp works for me.
You can see the active X controls that have been downloaded and whether they are insatalle, IE Tools, internet options, General tab, click settings, click view objects. Or look in C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files.
