Can't adjust brightness after installing Windows 10

Hello. I Have a Dell XPS 15 L521X.   Recently updated to Windows 10 and I can no longer adjust my brightness up or down.

Right now the display is pretty dim.  I would guess about 30% - 40% brightness.  In Widows 10 I found about 5 different places to adjust your brightness and I made sure all of them were set to 100%.  I have my power plan set to high performance and I went into the advanced settings and turned off adaptive brightness and made sure both display brightness & dimmed display brightness are both set to 100% on battery and plugged in.  Rebooted and still dim.

My question is, on Dell laptops, should Windows have full access to control brightness?  Or does Dell override Windows with their custom software for display settings?   When I bought this laptop in 2012, the software, at the time, was called Dell QuickSet.  Is that the application responsible for controlling screen brightness?  And is it required?

Thank you,

Mike

Here is how to adjust screen brightness in windows 10

1 – Right click on the battery icon and click on adjust screen brightness.

2 – Now, click on change plan settings of selected power plan.

3 – Now, click on advanced power settings.

4 – Click on Display and then from the expanded list just click on enable adaptive brightness and then turn on battery and plugged in option on. Finally, click on apply.

I know this is marked solved, but the solution didn't work for me and my PC. I have an Inspiron N5040, vintage around 2010. After getting the “Win 10 Creator” update last night, my display was dim and couldn’t be adjusted. Apparently, my PC is too old for Win 10 Creator.

First, I tried changing the Display setting “Enable adaptive brightness” to off as was suggested in the forums. It didn’t work. To find that Display setting, I actually had to look within the Power profiles settings. That was probably the first sign my PC was too old.

Next, I tried getting a new Display driver and eventually a new graphics driver. Windows kept telling me I had the latest drivers, so I went to the Dell site.

I went to the Dell support site and asked it to automatically tell me what drivers needed updating. It said I should update my BIOS from A 03 to A05. After a few tries at that, it eventually allowed me to update to BIOS  A 05 (At first the update software was telling me that it was running on an “unsupport system” but it eventually let me do it. I had to log in as Admin as opposed to trying to run the updater as a user, and then supplying the Admin password when it asked for it.)

However, even with the new BIOS in place, the Dell site and Windows update site still said I had the latest drivers applicable. I even tried to force an update to a more recent graphics driver (the Intel graphics 3000), but the updater said my hardware wouldn’t support it.

Finally, I told Windows to remove its Creator update and go back to the prior version. That did work. I’m now typing this on a bright screen.  Hope this info helps someone else.

After reading multiple posts about this issue I found a solution.

I already had the latest BIOS updates and video drivers installed.

I was running Windows 7 and updated to Windows 10 and the issue occurred.  I had a BIOS splash screen (visible - no dimming) but when booted into Windows 10 the screen was black (very dim).  I was able to shine a flashlight on it and see there was a desktop.

Turn on the computer, press F2 to get into setup.

Scroll down to Video

Click Ambient Light Sensor

Uncheck Ambient Light Sensor on the right side in BIOS.  Click Apply.

Exit.

Reboot computer.

This resolved my issue.  Turns out its not a driver update or BIOS issue but that specific setting in BIOS that **bleep** it up, I am just glad it took me 15 minutes to figure out instead of reimaging or rolling back to my previous OS.  Hopefully this helps you.  Platform is Dell OptiPlex E6400 but this could apply to different models as well.

Click the "show hidden icons" in the taskbar, open Intel Graphics Settings and go to the Display options, then "Color settings" on the left. There you can now adjust brightness and contrast. Took me forever to find out without any luck with any other method.

That only adjusts the color brightness. Not the back light brightness. I actually had to re-enable Legacy boot options because I dual boot with Linux. Reproducible every time when I disable Legacy boot the brightness controls fail to work.

I have a Dell Inspiron 17r 7720se with a 3D laptop screen

I have just upgraded to win 10 from Win 8.1.

I have a Geforce GT 650M (2GB) with a i7-3630QM processor (i.e. Intel 4000 onboard graphics).

After installing windows 10, I could not change the brightness of the laptop screen, and it was set to maximum.

I solved this issue by

1) I installed the latest GeForce driver (325.31) - this re-enabled the 3D display and showed the NVIDIA Control panel (but F4 and F5 still did not change the brightness, even though it "moved the sliding bar").

 2) I installed the latest Dell Intel Chipset driver "Chipset_Driver_2WGG0_WN32_10.1.1.7_A00.EXE" Although it says "release date 28 July 2015" when I looked at the upload it says "last updated 31 Mar 2019"

Version: 10.1.1.7 ,A00

Last Updated Date: 31 Mar 2019

File Name: Chipset_Driver_2WGG0_WN32_10.1.1.7_A00.EXE

File size: 10.84 MB

Description: This package provides the driver for the Intel Chipset Device Software and is supported on Vostro 3360, 3460, 5460, 5560, 5470, 5480 and Inspiron 3137, 3138, 5439, 5720, 7420, 7720, 7447, 7547, 7548, 7557 and XPS L322X, 9333 and Inspiron 20 Model 3043 running on the following Windows operating systems: Windows 10 32/64-bit

On installation, during reboot my laptop made that "new device plugged in sound" and the brightness changed straight away.

Solved - and happy.

Note I still cannot see the Intel HD 4000 graphics card in device manager. It seems to be that this is not supported by Windows 10.
