Can't boot up in Safe Mode

I need to boot up in safe mode so I can run antivirus software to remove adware that has loaded onto my laptop. If i press F8 while the machine is booting up, i can get to the screen to choose 'safe mode' option, then I get to the XP Home login screen (in safe mode)- but when i  select the 'Administrator' login the machine auto reboots back to normal mode. Can anybody help?

Antivirus software will not remove spyware. You need to run a couple of antispyware programs like SpyBot, Ad Aware, Spy Sweeper. etc. You should be able to run any of those without Safe Mode.

Some internet security programs will remove spyware. That is not the issue though. He can't boot into safe mode.
