Can't burn CD-RWs since installing SP2

I have a Inspiron 5100 with a Hitachi GCC-4241N drive.  Before SP2, I could easily burn CD-RWs with Easy CD Creator 5.  Since SP2, it no longer works.  I uninstalled ECDC and replaced it with NTI's Backup Now! which also doesn't work, giving "Error writing CD" errors.

The native Windows XP CD writer also doesn't work, giving "Windows does not support this CD-RW format" errors.

I have tried 4x and 12x media, both Imation and Memorex.  I have turned off all startup and background problems.  I have set IDE channels to DMA.  I installed a Flash update to the CD.

I'm out of ideas and would appreciate any help.

Our other laptop, an Inspirion 8100, with a GCC-4240N burns fine.

wrs,

Thanks for the post.  Roxio 5.3 is also available here from Dell, but I've moved on from Easy CD Creator.  I bought NTI Back Up Now! to do backups.  I need a solution that will work for it.

Any other ideas?

I just checked and I was using the Roxio 5.3 update when I started having these problems, so its not the answer.

Although EasyCD creator 5 is not supported for XP SP2, it works fine for me.

Assuming that you have the basic (OEM) version, you could see if updating from here helps:

If Roxio still does not work after that update, another thing to try, assuming you have the Dell CD with the OEM Roxio software is:

1. download Roxizap using this link (save to disk)

2. make sure DirectCD is not started in the system tray, go to Add/remove, uninstall Easy CD creator
3. Run Roxizap.exe.
4. Reboot.
5. Install Roxio software from the Dell CD, do not reboot when it asks, but immediately install the update patch; now reboot.

If oine or other of my assumptions is false (i.e. you don't have the OEM basic or the CD), then I think the only thing is to upgrade to either EasyCD creator 6 or Easy Media creator 7.

J, thanks for the post.  I did go through Roxiozap and it didn't work.  Roxio products seems to have lots of problems and are generally not well thought of, which is why I switched to NTI Back Up Now.  It has excellent reviews.

We own another Dell laptop with SP2 and ECDC 5 worked fine on it, too.  Go figure.

I am now thinking the problem is more with the system software/driver/hardware.  I'm not sure what to try next.
