I have the same problem with Vista and my wireless router. The only suggestion I have seen that may work is to simply wipe Vista off your system and install XP.
I like some of Vista's features, but I just can't get it to run reliably. Too many conflicts and mysterious bugs, at least so far.
Uninstall Mcafee, that's your problem. Or if you want to you can just disable the phishing filter, but I recommend that you uninstall the whole thing and find another anti virus solution it's just a huge resource hog. I had your problem and then uninstalled Mcafee and the internet works fine now. However it seems to have left some nasty traces and now I have Kaspersky installed and I'm having the same problems with that unless i disable it's mail and web av. If anyone has any suggestions for that I'd be grateful.
Vista works fine with wireless or wired networks and routers. In fact it's much better than XP. You do have to open the Network & Sharing Center in Vista to select the correct options. Many router problems are caused by incorrect set up. Look up Networking in Help. Routers & modems also need to be working & connecting to the Internet before the installation. Sometimes, just resetting the router, modem & computer will cure problems: Unplug electric power for both router & modem, turn off computer. Then plug in the modem first, wait 2 minutes, plug in the router, wait another 2 min until it communicates with the modem and then turn on the computer. More info in the Wireless Networking forum.
I am glad that Vista is working for you. Dell Support have spent between 4 to 6 hours trying to get it to work for me. They can't seem to get it to work. Many other people find that Vista is not working well for them. CNET recommends against moving from XP to Vista. You look to be a power user--judging from your post count---but for the more average users Vista has been a huge failure for many of us.
The bottom line: Windows Vista Home Premium is essentially warmed-over Windows XP Home Edition. If you're currently happy with Windows XP SP2, we see no compelling reason to upgrade. On the other hand, if you need a new computer right now, Windows Vista Home Premium is stable enough for everyday use.
If your not happy with your 2nd Vista system in the last 2 months just buy a copy of XP and be done with it. good luck
Thanks for posting the link to CNET. I hope you don't mind me posting my experiences with Vista when a user like myself is asking questions about Vista. I am not a power user and an expert as you are, but neither are most of the folks on here who are just trying to figure out what to do to meet their computing needs. Sometimes the experiences of less sophisticated computer users may be valuable to the purchasing decisions of others. I know that I appreciate the variety of views.
Some of article from CNET about Vista might help other folks choose between Vista, XP or the Apple OS I guess. For example, CNET also wrote :
"Windows Vista is Microsoft's first new operating system in more than five years
and the successor to Windows XP. However,
it is not worth rushing out to purchase."
CNET also says that "there's no one compelling feature within Windows Vista that cries out to switch over." CNET's last words on Vista in their conclusion of their review are these:
"Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is due out sometime before the end of the year. Windows Vista SP1 promises to fix what's known to be wrong within Windows Vista and should offer a few concrete reasons to switch. "
In light of the above quotes from the CNET article, I think my shorthand summary of the article as "Cnet recommends against moving from XP to Vista" was a more than fair description of the article. I expect that within the year Vista will be a good OS, but my guess is that will most likely be after the Vista service pack gets released. In the meantime, however, staring at powerful computers on our desks that can not get our work done will not be a choice a lot of us want to make.
Guys I don't think this is helping to solve the problem at hand here. If you want to start a Vista pros/cons discussion thread do so, but don't have it in there middle of a user's question
Steve, I agree with you that upgrading to Vista
Basic is not worth it over XP and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, agreed. The Cnet review is from Jan 07 before Vista was even released. I also am and never claimed to be an expert about anything. I learn from this forum and researching the purchases I make.
What I do object to is your endless posts about Vista and trumping the virtues of XP (there is nothing wrong with XP). I make my case in the provided link below:
