Thank you for your help. With this description I started first. The problem in my eyes begins with "Step three" point 7. Select port: Here my PC does not offer the selection "USB001".

If I take "LPT1:" instead (the printer is still conncted via USB) and press "Next".

The printer driver assistent opens and said "No driver for this device found" and offers to load a driver.

I press the button "Windows update". After some time I get a list of manufactorers, HP is included.

I select Hp. The only offered deskjet printer is deskjet 450c. I click on this driver. The driver was loaded. I select the printer as standard printer and agree to print a test side, but the printer never prints one.

I assume the problem is that the printer now is expected at the LPT1 connector instead of USB.

After asking the HP-Hotline they sent me the Deskjet 840C-driver. But to install this you need to select the printer connection and no USB is offered.

If I now print an e-mail the document is qued by the printer and the properties of the printer show that it is connected to LPT1. Even in the properties several ltt's and Com are shown but no USB

Try doing a properties on the printer in printers and fax's, see if there is a Ports tab, you may be able to change the port there.

Thank you for your help. I tried it out. I can change the connector in printer properties, connections. but with this selection it is the same trouble: No USB is offered. You can only select LPT, COM and FILE.

Is any other USB device working? You can disconnect all usb devices (except keyboard and mouse) from your PC and then go into device manager and uninstall all the  "USB root hub" entries under universal serial bus controllers, then reboot, then try the printer install again.

Try unplugging the mouse and keyboard while in XP and plug them into different usb socket. Check device manager to see if the root hubs were replaced upon reboot. No yellow ? in device manager.

All other USB-devicecs worked good.

May be that was no good idea.

I went on the first USB-root an uninstall it. After that i uninstall the second, keyboard and mouse worked no more. The optical mouse keeps dark .

To get a restart I make an external power off. After the restart the usual window comes up, the optical mouse has light again, but the mouse arrow on the screen does not move any more.

Even prssing Alt+Ctrl+Del gives no reaction.

Seems that I have locked out myself from the PC. Any idea what to do now?

Hi thank's for your patience.

When I wait until windows had started up and the user account are visible, the LED in the optical mouse is on. But no movement of the mouse arrow is possible and no reaction on a key strike.

Now I put the mouse and the keyboard in different USB-connectors. The mouse keeps dark, no reaction on key strikes.

Without mouse or keyboard I cannot look at the device manager.

Try using PS2 connector for the mouse; you can get a USB to PS2 adapter (came standard with my USB MS optical mouse and it is what I use), or get/borrow a PS2 mouse. The PS2 connector mouse will work, and you can then fix your USB problems.

Edited to correct SP2 to PS2 :-)

Unfortunately the Dimension 5150 has no more PS2-connectors. The only interfaces are USB, Firewire an Ethernet.
