cant get external only display i6400

Question

hi i have an inspiron 6400 with vista ultimate, and am having a bit of a problem. i cant seem to get vista to display on my external monitor only. when it says new display detected, and i select display on external only, and press apply, it does nothing. i only seem to be able to extend onto the external monitor. is there anyone who can offer some advice as to how to resolve this?? thanks   eds

This would be better posted in the Portables forum.There are Hotkeys for display settings. The manual and Help say this: Switching the Video Image

When you start the computer with an external device (such as an external monitor or projector) attached and turned on, the image may appear on either the computer display or the external device.

Press to switch the video image between the display only, the external device only, or the display and the external device simultaneously.
