Can't Hibernate...?

I recently restored my entire laptop and since then I haven't been able to use the energy saving options. Not able to hibernate, turn off screen, standby or anything of the sort?! The only options are Turn off or Restart and the Standby option is greyed out. I have tried going into my control panel and looking at Power Options but again all I have the option to do is 'Do Nothing' and 'Turn Off'. It even stays on when I try to close it.

Is there any way that I can turn the missing options back on, manually even??

thanks so much to anyone that can help :x

This is a frequently-asked question; in future, please start by using the forums search facility to try and find the answer.  There have been many posts on this question in recent days.

You need to have a video card driver installed which has properly-implemented power management, otherwise you will not have the option to Standby or Hibernate.

So the solution to your problem is to make sure that you have installed the correct driver for your video card.

The generic video drivers which are present in Windows XP do not fully support power management, because they have to be able to drive such a wide range of display devices.

I have looked in previous posts from 2003 and the suggestions there haven't helped my particular problem. I have checked under Power Options when I go to Power Schemes it only gives me the option to Turn off monitor after 'X' amount of minutes or to Turn off hard disks in 'X' amount of minutes. This is under the any of my selections whether it be Portable/LT or Home PC etc.

As far as the option to install all drivers etc... which on the cd would be related to my Power options, I have managed (obviously) to reinstall my bluetooth driver and sound/audio fine...

so RWM32 - the video card driver is the one I should be looking for on my driver cd? or is there a more specific name.file i should be looking for?

thanks again :smileywink:

Yes, the video card driver is what you need.  The options to Standby / Hibernate are not available unless Windows can confirm that the video card fully supports power management, which is (obviously) needed in order to get the display to come back on when the PC resumes from Standby / Hibernate.  As I said, the very basic generic drivers in XP don't support power management, because they can't assume anything about your video card's capabilities. So if you don't have the right driver for your video card installed, no Standby / Hibernate.

Sorry I was a bit sharp in my last post -- I realise now that the many previous posts (including my own) on the missing Hibernate option did not spell out what the problem is... I hope that this explanation makes sense of an otherwise apparently illogical solution to the problem.

Thanks so much. I'm gonna go see if I can figure this out :) and no worries... it takes a lot more to get to me... I didn't take it personal. ;)

if i don't figure things out you may see another message up from me :D

If you reinstalled windows and lost your hibernate and are using Media Center Edition you have also lost Dell QuickSet and MediaDirect. Both are available from Dell on the download page. Once you download and install both you will have the hibernate back. Download Quickset first and MediaDirect second. MediaDirect is what gives you back the hibernate but you cannot use MediaDirect unless you have QuickSet. Anything else lost during restore is also available on the download page but first check the System Software CD's that came with the computer Quickset is on the CD, MediaDirect is not.

Thanks so much. I did exactly that but now my options are there but I cannot select them?! What could the problem be now? I even have the choice to select Standby but it never does :/

thanks
