Can't log into XP

Hi
I had media center edition on my inspiron 6400. I just did a clean install and reboot my laptop after finishing the windows update. However weird things happened at the welcome screen. I clicked my user-icon, it says "loading personal settings" but after 2 seconds, it turns back as though I didn't ever clicked the user-icon. I tried safemode, administrator acount but couldn't get over it.
I googled around and found someone in a forum suggestting to copy the userinit.exe file on another computer and overwrite the wsaupdater.exe file. But I don't have a floppy disk and I tried to using a flash drive but failed.

Can anyone help me?
Thanks!

You could try this

Boot up with your XP installation CD and let setup run.
Select the first “R” you come to to enter the Recovery Console
You should be in C:\windows
Now follow from here:

C:\windows
type
cd system32
(If that does not work, try CHDIR SYSTEM32)
ENTER

the directory should now be
C:\windows\system32
type
copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe
ENTER

1 file should be copied,
REBOOT

Login might hang for a while.

Once in windows run Regedit and go to the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Look in the right pane for the Userinit value/subkey.
Double click the Userinit subkey and change it's value to C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe,
Make sure you have the comma at the end.
Exit Regedit.

Look if you have “wsaupdater.exe” here
C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe

Delete the WSAUPDATER.EXE  file.

Hi,
I am experiancing the same problem on my Experion 2400 descktop. I worked at all the differrent ways to start up the machine and have not found a solution yet. I suspect a virus worked it's way past my Microtrend internet software and setted into the computer some where.  I also am interested ina fix if anyone has one.

When you log on to your Account if it just flashes and disappears, the fix I posted is the only one I know. If this is your problem why does the fix not work?  Are you getting an error message?

If you have different symptoms please post them.

Ok I have been successfull today. I am currently emailing this via the computer that was down and It would log out as soon as It started to log on. I would click on my profile, The computer would start the profile build and then I would see my wall paper flash and then it would log out. All profiles did this.
I finaly got to the point where I could load windows from the Cd that came with the machine. I started windows with the CD copied userinit.exe into wsaupdater.exe as per the above instructions and rebooted off the CD again.

I could finaly load windows properly, did an immediate virus scan and found my win updates were missing. Probably from the load, not sure about that. Once I got the wireless to connect to the internet again I updated my virus scan software and downloaded my win updates. Not quite sure why or how but I believe it was a virus picked up from not having win updates installed. Also set my win updates to load automatically when the computer is being used. We shut it off between uses.
Thanks for the help folks. Take care.
