Can't re-install Win XP after installing SP2

I have installed SP2 and it seemed to work ok. However, I had a system crash (unrelated to SP2 I think) that is forcing me to re-install Win XP from the CD provided by Dell. The install fails with the message:
"Setup was unable to start service (tabsvr) because of the following error:
Open Service (tabsvr) returned erro 1060 (424).

I am running a Dell Dimension 4300 purchased about 2 years ago, so the version of XP on the CD is an old one (perhaps not even SP1). Can anyone suggest how I can restore the O/S without losing all my files?

Possible incompatibility. http://www.mcse.ms/message204398.html

A lot of seemingly unconnected fatal errors can be remedied by running chkdsk /r from Recovery Console. If there is an incompatibility factor use of the Console may not trigger it.

Did you boot to the XP reinstallation disc? . . This is a good guide for reinstalling on a Dell:  http://www.djdenham.com/Install%20Procedures.htm#Install
