cant register xp

I installed my xp home on my dauter's computer. Why? long story.

I can't register it because the cd came installed on my dell, I have to purchase another key.

I'm stuck (she is). I can't get any updates. I ran housecall and it came up with 5 pages of windows and explorer problems. All would be solved with SP2 and other updates.

I can't afford a new operating system or the 90 bucks for a new key.

What are my options? Do I try another operating system, Linnux?
I am not to bright with these big problems, at least their big to me. Just figuring out the small stuff still.
I can't even keep her computer on line, everytime she turnes it on there is another problem. Maybee its the lack of updates.

Some advise would be appreciated.

19cjs68,

Just what kind of computer does your daughter have?  What is the make, model number, amount of RAM, size of hard drive?.  What operating system was previously installed. More importantly, just what kind of problems is she having?  XP SP2 simply will not work on some older computers without BIOS, memory and hardware upgrades.  My bench testing machine is a Dell 4100 (circa 2000), 1Ghz PIII, 512Mb Ram, XP SP1a.  For whatever reason, it does not like SP2, and I could care less.  And yes, I have newer 3+Ghz P4s running SP2 with gigabytes of RAM and 100s of Gigabytes of storage space.

I suspect the problems you are having with your daughter's computer will most likely still exist if you upgrade to SP2.  Those problems need to be addressed before, not after, upgrading.  Please give us at least a few of the problems that Trend Micro's Housecall says would be solved with SP2.

I think the guy built the computer, he was into graphics. This is what PC wizard lists:

manufacturer- unspecified

mainboard- unspecified 692-596

bios- award 4.51

chipset- via appolo

Harddrive wdc wd205ba....21GB

processor- intell p3 eb  600mhz

physical memory 384mb

realtek network adaptor and dlink wireless and something else

PROBLEMS. ( I ran housecall again) most of thesae are listed as critical and all the vulnerabilities would not allow remote code execution. I have no idea what this all means

ms02-072,

ms03-001,007,014,023,026,039,040

ms04-011,012,013

There is more and I just listed the main heading not the paragrah that discibes the problem. Also bad problems with keeping her internet , she is on my wireless router and I am lost with the wireless thing. She has bridges, adaptors and other stuff listed in her network connections. It's a mess, maybee some of these issues have something to do with it.

Sorry for the huge post, you asked and I do appreciate that!

Hope this help you guys to maybe help me

thanks

19cjs68,
Well Charlie, I see what the problem is.  I assumed your daughter's computer was another Dell for which you could not locate the original Windows XP CD.  If that was the case, your Dell 8300 Windows XP CD could be used to install Windows and the Product Key changed to the XP Product Key on the other Dell's case.  This is a fairly common scenario we run into almost daily.

In your case, you have used a Dell XP CD to install Windows XP on a non-Dell computer.  It will install, but it will be rejected by the Windows Product Activation clearinghouse because the computer is not a Dell.  There is no way around this.  Windows XP essentially registers to one computer and one computer only.

To get the full benefits of Windows XP you must purchase a Windows XP license for your daughter's computer.  This can be done online or at a local retailer such as Wal-Mart or Costco.  See this link for more information on how to do this:  http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/addlic.mspx.

To solve many of the problems that Housecall indicates for your daughter's computer, you will still have to download drivers for her motherboard chipset and for its integrated components such as video, audio, etc.  The mainboard BIOS ID of 692-596 listed by PC Wizard indicates your daughter's computer most likely has an MSI Spacewalker or Shuttle Motherboard.

If you will open the case, look between the card slots or near the CPU, you will most likely find the manufacturer's board number. It may be something like MS-6199A.  Using this number, you can Google for driver downloads, go to www.driverguide.com, or perhaps visit the manufacturer's site for driver downloads.

Another method to get information about your motherboard and possible download sites, would be to download Aida System Info tool from here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download181.html

I hope this information helps you get your daughter's system up and running without so many problems.
