Can you do an End Task (on Application) by using Ctl/Alt/Del (pressing and holding them down in that order) ?

I also have one of the Dimention tower computers in the office reporting this.

Apparently the guy was using the computer last night and attempted to shut down as normal.

The display cleared down as usual, then a windows xp dialog box comes up with the alternating message 'Do not turn off or unplug your computer; it will turn off automatically', which then changes to 'Installing updates 1 of 3'.

This has been going all night and hasn't altered.  The keyboard, uncluding Ctl-Alt-Del doesn't work, although the Num Lock status led turns off and on when you press the Num Lock key.
Does anybody know whats going on? Or what will happen if i power off the computer?

Press and hold the power button (on the cpu) until system shuts down. Wait a few seconds and reboot. The chkdsk may want to run; let it. Go to Security Center and change setting from auto-update to "Turn Off... " Then go to WindowsUpdate site and download your updates. Restart manually if system doesn't auto-restart.  Now change your setting to "Notify me but..."

Post back whether it works or not.

I actually reset my computer to an earlier time period (after shutting laptop off by unplugging and removing the battery).  I am not a skilled computer user but I found a way to do a system reset and actually reset my settings to a prior point in time.  It seems to be working now.  Thanks.
