Can't Update Microsoft because of Active X

I'm running Windows XP Home addition on a Dimension 4550.  I can't get Microsoft Windows Update to run because it says my OEM software won't validate.  It can't run Active X.  Even with the work around that MS provides during the validation to run the little executable.  My network security settings are on Medium.  I've run the latest Adware scan and that hasn't helped.  I'm the Admin on the box.
Should I try a restore at a previous date to see if something went wrong recently?
Should I re-install IE 6?

ActiveX are stored in C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files

Try removing all the items in there. If some don't fully remove, you can try running CMD from Start, use the cd command to get to the directory, then run del *.* to remove all the files left over. Use rd to delete any folders. Then you would have to edit the registry - you would have to manually search for the key entries )like Micosoft Update or whatever) and remove them.

If it can't run ActiveX, either something is stopping it (like Microsoft AntiSpyware) or you need to check your settings in IE (set the Security tab to lowest - this is unsafe, but still allows an easier automatic installation of ActiveX controls).
