With Kazaa and warez, you probably have a ton of spwyare loaded on your machine, not to mention viruses. Are yu running antivirus software with up to date virus defintions? Have you scanned your systme for spyware/malware and removed all that is found?

I have spybot, spyware blaster, and spy doctor.  I currently Mc Afee as my virus agent and firewall. Neither Kazaa nor warez have worked on this machine since getting the dsl.  I have run my spyware and adware programs several times since then, and have run Mc Afee several times from their websight.  I have also downloaded a spyware and adware blockers specifically designed for kazaa and warez, which I got from downloads.com.  I just need to find out why these programs are not displaying "page not available" or requesting me to sign on to the internet, when I am currently on.

Go to the following site and follow the directions to download and run the analysis tool called HijackThis.

http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/

Generate a log file, then open it and copy and paste the text of the log file in a message in one of the following forums:

http://subratam.org/
http://www.zerosrealm.com/forums/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/

where a certified HijackThis expert can offer advice on how to fix the problem:

Thomas Crown,

How was the system connected before you installed DSL? If your DSL installation includes a router, the IP address your system is receiving may not be routeable on the Internet, while the previous IP address was. That difference would prevent programs from making outbound connections.

You can check the IP address your system is receiving by opening a cmd.exe window (Start/Run cmd.exe). In the window that opens, type ipconfig /all. If the IP address listed begins with 192.168, or 10, or 172.16, those addresses aren't routeable on the Internet and are being "translated" to a routeable address by a router.

If that is what you're seeing, you may need to reconfigure your DSL router to allow systems on the Internet to connect to your PC. The specifics depend on how the programs work.

nicee,

It sounds like your browser has been hijacked by malware.

First, make sure your antivirus software definitions are current, and scan your system for viruses. If that doesn't resolve the problem, download, install, update and run Ad-Aware and Spybot as described in this article.

If the problem still isn't resolved, download HijackThis, a malware analysis and removal tool, and submit the log it produces for analysis to one of the sites listed below.

Here's an illustrated guide to installing and running HijackThis that you may find helpful.

With the Windows Explorer, go to C:\, right click and create a folder named HJT. Unzip the downloaded file HijackThis.zip into the newly created directory, C:\HJT.

After installing HijackThis.exe in the directory C:\HJT, run Hijackthis from that directory. Click on the 'scan' button and then 'save log' button. Save the file in the directory C:\HJT. Use a name like HijackThis.txt.

Here are some sites where you can receive help analyzing your HijackThis log from trained experts. Note that the sites require registration before you will be able to post.

Subratam.org
BleepingComputer.com
ZerosRealm.com

There's been a renewal of successful malware cleanups in the Dell Forums Virus/Spyware Information and Removal board. You may want to post your HijackThis log in that board.

Copy and paste the contents of the log you saved in a new message in one of the forums listed above. Be sure to describe the problem you're experiencing. DON'T ATTEMPT TO FIX ANYTHING REPORTED BY HIJACKTHIS without expert advice!

There are lots more people with malware problems they haven't been able to resolve than there are expert HijackThis analysts, so please be patient. Please see the Alliance of Security Analysis Professionals (ASAP) site for a complete list of member sites providing support and assistance.

If you need more help, I'd suggest posting a new message in the Virus/Spyware Information and Removal board.

The barely understandable outsourced tech (?), said it sounds like I am missing some information from their installation cd.  After about 5 minutes explaining to the tech(?) that the installation could not connect to the internet to complete the sofrware and driver installation, he agreed to send a physical tech out to work with me at a charge of $60.00.  Either way, the problem is going to be fixed.

To all who have responded to my question, thank you for your input.  It is a problem with sbc dsl install.  Isn't funny that most responses to articles within these forums are all about downloading adware, spyware, or anit-virus programs.  What company that produces these type of protection programs would need to advertise any other way then Dell forums.  Thanks again to everyone.

Thomas,
I also go to this link--- http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html--- and upgrade your AdAware to AdAware SE, it's a free application and finds alot that AdAware doesn't.

Thomas Crown,

Glad you got the problem resolved! For future reference, what changes did you or SBC need to make?

Regarding spyware...The sad fact is that a very large number of the network connectivity problems people experience turn out to be malware-related.

Efficient Networks Speedstream 5100.  The tech(?) might have been trying to just get off the line with me.  I get a little irate with these outsourced tech that are just using a cheat sheet.  You stump them on something and they just start going through the motions all over again.

After about 5 minutes explaining to the tech(?) that the installation could not connect to the internet to complete the sofrware and driver installation...

Depending on which DSL modem/router you received, there may not need to be any software installed from the SBC CD.

Which model DSL modem do you have? Perhaps we can get things working!
