Is it the 5100a or the 5100b? The 5100a is a bridge, but the 5100b is a router.

(edit) Just found this information at DSL Reports - 5100b part number is 060-E142-A01 versus 060-E141-A01 on the 5100A.

That sounds like an updated model of the 5100b.

Here (according to a post by "The Chef" in this DSLReports thread) is the way it's supposed to work:

"The new modem is not a firewall. Unless configured otherwise, once a connection is established to the Internet the public IP address is passed to the LAN adapter.

Until that occurs, or when you are not connected, a private IP address is passed to the LAN adapter.

If you want to always pass a private IP address to the LAN adapter, modify the modem via the GUI at 192.168.0.1 to issues a private IP address (and not a public IP address)."

So once the 5100b has been authenticated by the SBC registration server, the default behavior is that the PC connecting to it will receive a public (routeable on the Internet) IP address, but it can be configured to issue a private IP address instead.

If you run "ipconfig" on the PC (Start/Run cmd.exe), and in the window that opens, type ipconfig /all, do you get an address that begins with 192.168, or something else? If it doesn't begin with 192.168, don't post the IP address, since posting it would be a potential privacy issue. If you want me to check the IP address, send it to me in a Private Message.

Am I right that the connection works for most programs (Web browsers, EMAIL, for example), and not for others?

I had the same problem only difference for me was dial-up (not dsl) I had a dell  certified tech at my house, told him about the problem and he told me it was from, spyware or malware and that it hijacked my system. He installed Mozilla/firefox internet browser as my default browser and everything communicates fine.  You can download this at mozilla.org.
