Changing administrator password
I have an inspiron 3500 that I bought pretty cheap, but I have been trying to change the settings and it will not allow me. I keep getting the following message: "You do not have permission, please contact your administrator." I cannot reach the person in which I bought the laptop from and am clueless as to what the administrator's password is. Is there anyway I can change it without knowing the former password?

Try this. Go to Start » Run and copy/paste or type this in the box control userpasswords2 . You should be able to change the settings from there.
You can also find the name assigned to your computer using the little VBS file here:

If you want to change the registered owner etc., copy/pate the bold text below to Notepad and edit the XXX's to your (selected) name. Then 'save as' name.reg to the desktop and run it. It will change all the previous names to the new one you entered:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"DefaultUserName"="XXX"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"AltDefaultUserName"="XXX"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"RegisteredOwner"="XXX"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\]
"RegisteredOwner"="XXX"

If you are attempting to change the system administrator password and you are able to log on in an administrator account, you can change the password using the procedure given here.
If you are simply unable to log on in an administrator account, please post that fact.
