I had the same problem, which is now resolved since I upgraded to SP2. It is a know issue that was resolved in SP2. One other issue, are you using an HP printer or scanner. I noticed that prior to the install of SP2, when I disconnected my HP devices, the problem also went away. Hope this helps.
boot the comp from the xp cd, XP will run through the setup procedure at which point it will detect the previous installation. It will ask if you wish to repair the existing installation using the Repair console. select the repair console, select the correct partition then at the prompt run the chkdsk -r command.

from where are you running check disk, within windows, on schedule or from the xp boot disk.
I would suggest running from the xp install disk from repair console with the command chkdsk -r

do I have to boot up the computer from the windows xp cd to repair check disk? Also what are the steps I must follow to do this?
