check disk won't run

I can't get my disk check to run.  I am running windows7 home premimium.  I ask it for a disk check on next start up and when i do my nest start up it gives me the black screen and says a disk check has been scedualed press any key to cancel. then it cancels on its own  and I don't touch a thing.  what can I do to fix this. I had this issue before and i worked with a tech from dell while my computer was under warrenty.  he fixed it by remote but did not show or explain what he did.  please help.
