Chipset Drivers

Inspiron 6000D:
I rma'd a hard drive and received the new one, installed Windows sp2 with the cd that came with the
computer.  Is it ok to install the system drivers from the cd labeled "Dimension resource system device drivers"? Did they send the wrong system cd or are they ok for the Inspiron 6000? Does XP install the drivers for the chipset? Thanks!

Fairwayman,

I guess you received a wrong CD. Dimensions Resouce CD would have the drivers for the Dimensions Desktops. An better option would be to download the drivers from the support.dell.com ( recommended as you would get all the latest drivers ) or get in touch with DELL support for the correct CD.

Download Section on Support.dell.com :

sdinesh is absolutely right you have the wrong CD and you will get the latest drivers from the download site. Please take the advice sdinesh gave you and call Dell and get the right CD. There are many other important things on the CD for your system. These important items are on the CD and should be installed in the order listed here. "Notebook System Software", "Chipset Driver", "Video Driver", "Audio Driver", "Input Driver" (touchpad), "Communication Driver" (modem), "Network Driver" (Broadcom), "Wireless Driver". No XP does not install the Chipset and yes now you know because it is in the above list.

Ok dloaded and installed all drivers from Dell, all is well accept I have two yellow ex points in device mngr, 1-ethernet controller, 2-pci modem.  Can I highlight and uninstall then reboot and will xp rebuild these? I could not find these drivers on the Dell list for my Inspiron 6000D.  Thanks!

You should really get the CD from Dell, everything important you need is on the CD, then you can later on download the updated versions because you will have the version numbers on the CD to check against the ones at Dell. Usually the latest ones are listed first and their numbers are higher and the release dates are more recent so it is easy to figure out which one is the latest, but I have seen many mistakes in listings. No harm in double checking. You are missing the Network Driver and the Modem Driver and both are available at the download site. At the download site Modem Driver is listed under "Communication Driver" and Network Driver is listed under "Network Driver" Wireless is also listed under "Network Driver" but does say wireless. Check the list I posted earlier to see if you are missing anything else. Let us know how everything goes and if it goes well I will tell you the other things you are missing.

OK I will do the list and try to have it ready within 2 hours. How old is your Inspiron, are you on DialUp or high speed, what is your OS XP Home or XP Pro, do you have Media Center Edition, do you have a TV Tuner and what country are you in. This information is not really needed but could be helpful. I already have all the information available and may Post info which does not apply to your system but may be helpful to others reading the Post and needing this info.

Inspiron 6000 OK when you get the "System Software CD" from Dell check the list I first posted for you on 4/18/07 to see if you omitted anything you may want, everything I listed then is on the CD and most of them are needed to run your system properly. Some of the things in the following list will not apply to your system but what does apply will be helpful and needed sooner or later. What does not apply I am posting for other viewers. List: "Java" on the CD or download from www.java.com. "Modem helper" on the CD listed as "Communication Diagnostics Utility" or download from Dell. "Broadcom Advanced Control Suite 2" (this is a diagnostics utility for your Network Controller) download from Dell listed as "Network Diagnostics Utility". "QuickSet" on the CD or download from Dell. "Media Direct" (this is for Media Center Edition and will not work if Quickset is not installed) download from Dell. "TV Tuner Driver" on the CD listed as "Emuzed Angel USB TV Tuner" or download from Dell. "Net Waiting" (this is for DialUp but your ISP must be a V.92 Server and you also need call waiting from your telephone service) download from Dell listed as "Communication Utility". "Digital Line Detect" (this is for DialUp and Version must match Modem Driver Version) download from Dell and find by entering digital line detect in the "Download Search" box. "Dell Support 3.1" on the "Tools System Software CD" or download from Dell. Good Luck, Post results please!
