Clean Install error message

I am trying to upgrade my Dimension 8200 from XP home to XP Pro. But when I go through the process of trying to install XP Pro, I get the following error message while windows is checking the hardware configuration:

The file usbuhci.sys is corrupted.

I get as far was Setup is loading file (open host controller), but then I get the above error message.

From here I only have the option to reboot my computer. Anyone have any idea how to fix this so that I can install XP Pro on my desktop?  All USB devices are working just fine and I have not had any problems with any of devices attached to my computer. I have unplugged all USB cables from my computer with no luck. I have even tried to remove the USB devices that are using this file but have had no luck.

Thanks,

Brian

Brian, I know little about this and almost hesitate to offer information.  Using a couple of search engines, most often I was pointed to a need to update on of the USB device drivers.  I will give you the information for what it is worth, and I am sure someone else will be along to help.  This will give you something to look at until then.  Good Luck.

did you set the bios to boot from the cd-rom, and then boot from the win xp cd? if you are already doing that, and still having trouble, i would suggest that you shut down the computer and let it sit for a minute, and then try again.. one time, i had a similar probem, but on the third try, it worked.. maybe the problem is that you have a keyboard or mouse plugged into a usb connection.. i have heard that that can cause a problem when reinstalling win xp..

Yes, I hit F12 and choose CD-ROM from the boot menu. I have tried unstalling the software that came with the wireless optical mouse I have added to this computer and used an older mouse and that does not help.  And I don't even have it hooked up to my usb ports.  It's hooked in through the PS2 connection. The keyboard is not hooked up to usb ports either.  Shutting the computer off for a few minutes doesn't help either because the computeris turned off every night. Would it be a bad idea to just go ahead and delete the usbuhci.sys file and then try a clean install again? Or could this cuase even more problems?

Thanks again for your help and advice.

if you boot from the win xp cd, there should not be any files to delete.. i am thinking that you are not doing things properly.. you need to set the bios to boot from the cd-rom.. to do that, press F2 as the computer is booting up to access the bios settings, then set the cd-rom (or dvd-rom) to first boot device.. then exit the bios settings.. the computer will reboot.. put the win xp cd in the cd-rom.. reboot.. then, you will see a message on the screen that says "press any key to boot from the cd".. it is very quick.. press any key to boot from the cd... did you do that? if you do that, files should then begin loading from the win xp cd (booting from the cd).. once the computer has booted from the cd, then follow the simple prompts to do a clean install of win xp. delete any partitions, and create a new one, then format the harddrive with ntfs (full format) and then win xp will proceed to install automatically.. also, you can find instructions in dell support/solutions/reinstall guide..

With the BIOS that I have, A09, I have the option to either hit F2 or F12.  F12 basically is used to quickly change the boot sequence.  Once I do that, I then get a menu that gives me 4 choices, including booting from CD, which I choose.  My computer then continues to boot using the CD.  This is the exact same process that used on a friends computer two weeks ago and it worked with no problems.  The Windows CD goes through the process of loading files, but everytime I do this, it stops when it gets to "loading files (open host controller)".  That's when I get the message about a corrupted file.  At that point I have no choice but to reboot the computer.  I never get to the point where I can delete the partition and re-install Windows.

Thanks again for the help.

sorry that you are having trouble.. like i said, i had a similar experience once, but after i shut down the computer and let it sit for a minute, on the third try, it worked.. are you sure that you have all usb devices unplugged? the only other thing that i can think of to try would be to use dell's harddrive "debug", but that will effectively erase everything on the harddrive, so you could not then boot into windows again until windows had been reinstalled.. if you want to try that, search in dell support for "debug".. (you have to download the file and then create a floppy with the program on it) have you ever flashed the bios? if you have, maybe you could try flashing the bios again.. what model dell do you have?

Redwolfe,

I think I found the problem.  The problem looks like it is on the CD.  I put in another copy of XP Pro, and even a copy of XP Home, and booted from the CD and was able to get past where I was getting hung up at. So I will assume somehow the usbuhci.sys file somehow has gotten corrputed on the CD even though it worked two weeks on another computer.

Anyway, thanks for all your help.

Brian
