Clean Install on E510

Hi,

I've been having a ton of problems lately trying to do a clean install on my Dell E510 machine. I used the $10 extra slipstreamed copy of Windows Media Center 2005 I got with my machine to format my drive (getting rid of the utility partition and the existing install) and usually come across two errors going through a fresh install:

1) The first is a hang in the Windows installer where it will tell me to insert the SP1 CD disc. Of course I can't eject the DVD since its running the installer and there's no other discs at my disposal. At this point there's no other option than to hit "Cancel" and the installation somehow continues...

2) The second hang is after I eventually bypass the first hang and it gets to the part of the install where the giant window comes up saying "Installing Applications...Don't press anything." I assume at this point it's installing the media center components on top of windows...It will then hang pretty much forever, until I CTRL+ALT+DELETE to be able to close the inevitable click window that comes up telling me it can't find the Dell folder on the disc. I then get windows working as normal, but because it never installed some of those Dell-provided components I am left with no MPEG codecs to run the TV channels and Media Center won't recognize my Dell Angel II tuner card even after installing the drivers...

This is driving me absolutely nuts, and I'm wondering if anybody had these similar problems with a E510 fresh install before I get on the horn for the inevitable 2+ hour chat with Dell in Bangalor.

Once you start the installation, it does not use the dvd/cd drive exclusively. It transfers the files to a temp folder on your hard drive and works from that. You most certainly can eject the disk when it asks for proof of ownership or a diff disk and put it the other disk. Let it verify what it needs to and wait for it to ask for the installation disk again.

If you don't have the DVD application software like MyDVD, PowerDVD or whatever the case may be, MCE TV will still not work.
I too have a E510 with a fresh install, and even though all the drivers are installed and devices are working properly, TV will still not work. I had to order the Applications CD's.

How do I order the Applications CD's?
