In almost any app, highlight text or pic, and use that app's copy or cut  (on this board the first two icons) You can save the contents as a .clp file if you wish to recover it later (File menu, open). I don't seem to have a local clip book, however, options for that are either missing or greyed out. I don't think it is part of XP (search in help and support turns up nothing).

PS I'm not alone

Yes I have it installed that's not the problem. After a bit of looking around, I think I understand why the local clipbook option is not showing on my PC. It is intended for sharing across a network and also requires the Clipbook service to be active, which in turn requires Network DDE and Network DDE DSDM. However, my PC is stand alone, and even if I start those services (I had them disabled), Local Clipbook does not show as an option. Presumably it requires a network connection.

JRosenfeld,

Clipbrd.exe (in C:\Windows\system32) is Windows' native clipboard/clipbook viewer. It works well without a network. You can readily make a shortcut to it on the desktop to view the contents of the clipboard or if desired place the shorcut under Start|All Programs|Accessories.

Denny,

Yes, I have no problems with clipboard viewer as such to see what is on the clipboard and, indeed to save its content as a .clp file. That allows one to see one entry, either placed there by the most recent cut or copy command, or if a previously saved .clp file is opened.

What is not working (no option in Window menu) is to view or use 'local clipbook', as mentioned in the Help file, and the subject, as I understood it, of the original question in this thread. The local clipbook allows one to save and see (as icons or thumbnails) a list of previously copied entries in the local clipbook viewer, selected from the Window menu; one could then easily select any one of them and copy its contents into a document. Useful, for example, if several different bits of text or pictures are used often.

That is the component that is missing with me and, I gather with the questioner and others who posted at annoyances.org. As far as I can remember it's been in Windows since W3.1 for Workgroups. I certainly used it on occasion in W95 and W98. In XP, the helpfile refers to the local clipbook in the context of sharing its contents over a network, and that is why I speculate that in XP it is only available if one is on a network. I have not found a way of making this component active on my stand alone system.

Of course, there are easy work arounds, including just saving and opening individual.clp files as needed; however the local clipbook was more convenient, as all the saved entries were available and viewable as a group.
