Codec needed? Windows Vista...
I just did a reinstall of Windows Vista Home Premium.
Everything appears to be fine, except...
Although I've been playing mp4 files in Realplayer and Windows media for the past three years...Now I can't play them...
Did I forget to install something??? Did I have some codecs installed before???
Any help would be very appreciated,

Watersign,
Did you download and install Vista Codecs?
When you reinstalled the operating system, did you install the Desktop/Notebook system software and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order
Start with the Desktop/Notebook system software and the chipset drivers and follow the list.

Yes, I might have gone wrong right there, I just inserted the dell drivers cd that I had.
I guess if figured it was going to load everything properly from the disk.
Guess I should do another reinstall?

Looking back at the reinstall listings, I realize why I loaded the drivers the way I did.
The driver page asks for your service tag.
After I input the service tag for my computer, a listing comes up for your drivers.
There is no category for dss (for windows vista systems)
There is no category for Chipset
I guess that threw me off right there...

Watersign25,
Make and model of your computer and operating system. 32-bit or 64-bit?
Some models may not have the DSS but there should be chipset drivers.

It's a Dell Inspiron 531
32 bit
Windows Vista Home Premium
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual-Core 4400+
Originally 2 Gig RAM (now 3.5)
Purchased in 08/2007 , so seriously looking into replacing with current technology, but hard to depart with a machine that served me well...
Thanks for your efforts

I have requested Dell list all the drivers in the correct install order on many an occasion.
There seems to be neither any Dell System Software or a Chipset Driver listed for your system.
There is a CPU driver however. Also your system is AMD and not Intel. Try:
Dell System Software R259999
CPU R151573
Please can you look at the device manager as instructed in step 12 here. Have you installed Service Pack 1 and 2? Can you see any errors in the device manager?

Also with regards to the codec, install the full klite codec pack (without player) and set associations for Windows Media Player.
