Comm software for VISTA
Is there any free software out there, that works on Vista, similar to Hyperterminal? I am trying to check to see if a modem is Caller ID compatible, using the tips here: http://www.mtnsys.com/Pages/howto/htmdmtst.htm
My 9200's OEM Conexant modem works great with Caller ID software (Call Trace), but I cannot get mom Mom's 9200 to work with her OEM modem. I've tried three different modems now - quite frustrating. I'm thinking perhaps the modems actually do work, it just need to be sent the correct settings....but I dont even have software to send the settings.
I am at the stage now where I am going to buy dozen new modems and try and trerun each one until I find one that works. This is a bit insane, but I dont know what elese to do.
Amazing that in this day and age, this stuff does not simply work out of the box. How hard can it be to disaplay a phone number on a computer when the phone rings!!
Thanks

1) could not figure our where in the program I would put in a string to send to the modem
2) what do you mean by "make a serial connection" ???

Hello ,
when you open putty you wil find the PuttY Configuration Box
on the session Category you will find a radio button "Serial" clic on it
than enter your COM Port in the "Serial Line" textBox
Than clic Open you wil get a Terminal in witch you can type Command to your modem

Puttty is driving me nutty!
I did as you said but I get "Unable to open connection to COM1. Unable to open serial port.
I tried COM2, COM3 and COM4
Vista (and most s/w) reports my modem as COM3 ( Device Manager/Modems/Conexant/Properties/Modem)
Any advice??

OK problem solved.
I 'simply' copied Hyperterminal from an older machine. Not sure why I was under the impression that option was not available to me...

For the benefit of others, I found an EXCELLENT call display package here:
http://www.identafone.com/pro.html
Works fine on all my DELLS. Even has the terminal window I was looking to validate the mdoem is CID compatible... ie you can test that it sends the CID initialization string.
I use it not only to display incoming calls but also to send emails of incoming callers to my office PC (and blackberry). It even puts the name and number in the subject line so you dont need to open the email!
It keeps a running caller log so if I am out for a few hours, I can open up one file and see all the incoming calls at once.
As a nice bonus, in addition to call display notifications, is has a super slick feature where the call display notificaition can be sent to pop-up on any networked PC.....so now I can see incoming calls on computers in other rooms that dont even have a modem. Very cool.
Has other features as well which I dont use ( eg speed dial, call answer etc).
Tech support is EXCELLENT - typically get a reply in a hour or so!
EXACTLY what I was looking for.
