Compatibility

How do I find out if my T3400 Precision Workstation, purchased in 2009 is compatible with Windows 8 or 8.1 in the first place? A compatibility table I came across on a DELL web page does not list T3400 among those desktops and workstations which can be upgraded to Windows 8. If that is the case, is my workstation doomed to stay with XP, or Vista which is also installed on the computer; this is bad news for me.I would appreciate comments on this.

Thanks

Dells Windows compatibility tables are pretty useless. It only means systems Dell will provide drivers for. Dell have not provided drivers for the T3400 and Windows 8.1 so would deem it incompatible:

Windows 8.1 will work fine however as Windows 8.1 has a lot of inbuilt driver support and Windows 7 drivers will work with Windows 8.1 in a lot of cases. Moreover sometimes drivers can be taken from later models.

For instance my XPS 8300 is deemed incompatible by Dell yet runs flawlessly and the drivers are actually all there, can be taken from the XPS 8500 and 8700 or other similar models.

I would advise trying the Enterprize version of Windows 8.1 to see how well it runs before committing to purchasing a new license. See my Windows Reinstallation Guide/A Clean Install of Windows 8.1 for details:
