Compressed Zip Folder

I want to create a password protected compressed Zip folder. When I try to rename it, I get a prompt ( If you change a file name extension,the file may become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?  If I click yes it changes the zip file to a regular file. What am I doing wrong. I have Windows Xp. Thanks.

just be sure when you edit the name of the file you leave the .zip on the end of the file name....
 
Open windows explorer  "flag + E keys"    go to tools/folder options, view Tab, look for "hide extensions for known file types" and tick the box, hit OK, this will make editing file names much easier...
