Computer Locks Up on startup

My computer locks up on Startup just after the Volum icon appears by the clock.  The icon for Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect does not load.  I receive the Message: The system is waiting for the Close Program Dialog Box to be displayed.  You can wait and see if it appears or you can re-start your computer.  The Close Program dialog Box does not appear regardless of how long I wait.

Press any key to return to windows:  Does not work

Press Control+Alt.+Delete to restart your computer:  does not work

I turn the computer off, wait, turn back on.  It goes through Scan Disk, loads and works O.K.  What gives?  It has done this 3 times in the last 4 days.  Please Help!!!                                 T Morris

Sounds like a poorly performing startup program. Have you tried running MSCONFIG and clearing unnecessary items from startup?

Yes, you need all of those. Check this MS KB article for another troubleshooting step:

Osprey4  The Microsoft Ssite got a little complicated for me. I just checked out what had happened over the past few days and found that I get the Lock Up on startup after some of the Norton Live Updates.  This has happened before but I didn't relate it to Lock Up on startup.  After I got your message I had another Norton Live Update and the Lock Up problem went away.  Is this Possible???        T Morris

Yes, that makes sense. NAV is a great program but it has it's quirks. Glad that worked out.
