If you have a "mechanical" mouse with the ball, the "clip" that holds the ball in will rotate and come off so that you can remove the ball and clean it out (Just blow out the insides). You can clean the ball with water.

Added to the cleaning of the ball. Inside are two rollers that the ball sits on. Clean those as well. I use a plastic tooth pick. You will see a single track looking mark on these rollers.

Thanks, Fudgieguys and Fireburd -- I'll try those suggestions when I get home from work tonight!

With the prices for opitcal mouse being as cheap as $14, maybe better off buying one. No more blowing out dust bunnies. They work on any surface.

t's not the price -- it's setting it up.   Would it be a problem for Ms. Computer Challenged?  (Incidentally, tried all the suggestions above, and it's working now!  Thanks again)

Just plug in the mouse.  Then the only thing is the connector on the mouse.   ps/2 is the round connector (mouse has green color and the keyboard has purple connectors), then you have ps/2 ports) and the USB is the flat connector. You can still get optical mouse with ps/2 connectors.

Thnaks.  Just wish I didn't have 50 million wires behind the computer to decipher!
