Computer not recognizing connection--driver problem

Question

I reformatted my desktop Dimension 8250, and then installed the drivers from the driver installation disk that came with my computer.  I then tried accessing the internet, and it did not work.  I connect with an Ethernet Cable.  I called Dell Tech Support but because my warranty is up, I could only talk to the hardware agent for free.  He told me he was sure it was a driver problem.  It turns out my Ethernet Controller device needs a driver which somehow did not install with the other drivers and Windows XP.  Lastly, the hardware guy at Dell I talked to said that what I needed was a 'Cnet PCI Adapter' driver or something like that.  I may have misunderstood him due to his accent, however.  So...what do I do?  I am on my laptop which receives a wireless signal from the router I just hooked up, so it has to be a problem with the software on the desktop.  (Its not a router problem; directly connected to the modem my desktop doesnt receive a signal).   Any suggestions?  Thanks a lot.   Sterling

So after I install those drivers, the ethernet controller should work just fine?   Edit:  I installed the chipset drivers with ease, but the LAN driver is a bit more challenging.  When I extract the files, a page comes up with instructions for installing 'NIC Driver'.  I followed the instructions until I get in the device manager.  It says press the + on Network Adapters then right click on the 'appropriate adapter' and right click to properties on it.  I instead right clicked the Ethernet Controller under other, but then when I click Update Driver for the Controller I do not know which manufacturer made the hardware to select it. Help? Thanks.
