Computer Stuck in Safe Mode
My niece's brand new laptop received a message that she had picked up the trojan.vundo virus. While attempting to fix it herself, she restarted her computer in Safe Mode. She is unable to continue with any other steps to fix the problem and every attempt to restart or do system recovery is unsuccessful. She is completely stuck and unable to restart in normal mode. She did not receive any Windows XP startup disks with her computer. Of course, she is unable to access dell.com for any online technical assistance. I thought perhaps I could make a copy for her on my computer from the web site, but again, we can't get past safe mode. A service call into Dell technical support was not any help whatsoever.
Can
anyone provide some assistance, please? I would be most appreciative of any help. My computer expertise is limited at best. Thanks so much in advance!!!

First of all, your niece needs to get a copy of Windows XP for situations just like this one. See this.
Vundo is a difficult virus to remove--your best bet is to check in the Special Interes - Virus/Spyware Information and Removal conference.
In the meantime, if you have a Dell with the same version (Home or Professional) of Windows XP you can use your reinstallation CD to reinstall Windows on her computer. You should not be prompted to enter a Product ID nor to activate the isntallation after it is completed.

Thank you very much for your reply to my forum posting regarding my niece's computer stuck in safe mode. She did not receive a Windows XP upon shipping. Her laptop is a Inspiron 700m which she just purchased in August. The only disks she received were WordPerfect and MS Office. There was a small card inside that said her computer does not require an operating system CD or drivers CDs. Instead it says to use Microsoft Windows System restore or Dell PC restore right on her computer, both of which I've tried. Neither works while in safe mode....again where we are stuck. I attempted to create the operating system CD as your attached instructions detail. However, the only options available under Dell Accessories are Driver Reset Tool and Express Service Code. There was no choice for Dell OS Recovery CD.
Next I will email Dell support and request the recovery CD directly from them as you suggest. Thank you again for your assistance.
