Connection Issues - Internet & Email

After successfully getting rid of a virus (Winfixer) I began having problems with my Earthlink email and couldn't send or receive messages.  After many frustrating on-line chats with Earthlink staff I was advised to uninstall and reinstall the Earthlink's Total Access 2005 software.  So now, not only am I still unable to send/receive email, but I can no longer connect to the internet either!!  After dialing up and starting to connect - it suddenly disconnects and the following message appears:  Error While Connecting:  The following error occurred while connecting:  "The PPP link control Protocol was terminated."  (I am getting no help from Earthlink staff on the phone either.)  Can anyone please help in user friendly terms?  Thank you very much!!  (I am sending this from work.)

See if these setting corrections from Microsoft will help.

It doesn't look like the information is for Windows XP but I will try it tonight and report back tomorrow.

ARose,

Try the link below. Download the zip version and read the Read Me file. I have used it to correct loss of connection, but only on DSL and cable.

The Microsoft website settings worked and I can now connect to the internet.  The only problem I still have is sending/receiving email messages.

I have Earthlink, but I don't use their software. If you are using Outlook Express, open Tools> Accounts> Select the earthlink account and click Properties. Click on Servers tab and see if POP3 is incoming server.
Incoming mail: pop.earthlink.net
Outgoing mail: smtpauth.earthlink.net
Outgoing mail server should have a check by: My server requires authentication
Click the Settings button: this should display your email address as Account name.
With the check on the top: Log on using
Make sure your password is typed in and Remember password is checked.
