It doesn't look like the information is for Windows XP but I will try it tonight and report back tomorrow.

 Try the link below. Download the zip version and read the Read Me file. I have used it to correct loss of connection,but only on DSL and cable.

The Microsoft website settings worked and I can now connect to the internet.  The only problem I still have is sending/receiving email messages.

I have Earthlink, but I don't use their software. If you are using Outlook Express, open Tools> Accounts> Select the earthlink account and click Properties. Click on Servers tab and see if POP3 is incoming server.
Incoming mail: pop.earthlink.net
Outgoing mail: smtpauth.earthlink.net
Outgoing mail server should have a check by: My server requires authentication
Click the Settings button: this should display your email address as Account name.
With the check on the top: Log on using
Make sure your password is typed in and Remember password is checked.
