connectivity

My system running WIN XP and broadband Roadrunner connection works fine until after a period of inactivity. I have a screen saver with the power savings settings all set to never except the monitor which shuts down after 20 min. After I hit a key to reactivate the system I find I can't connect to the internet on either IE or Firefox and get a message saying, "No such host ( pop-server.rochester.rr.com),Ensure that pop3 server is correct". I then reboot and everything works normally. Can you help? Thanks

The "pop" server is the e-mail server, and should not have anything to do with your Browser.

However, make sure you are not inadvertantly turning off something else.

Unfortunately you didn't include your PC model or what type of Broadband interface you have (USB or Ethernet NIC).  If you are using USB, you should consider using the Ethernet connection if you have a network card.  That is more stable than USB and less problematic.

I've had a few isolated cases of not being able to access my broadband connection after I "stop all internet activity" with the Roadrunner provided EZ Armor firewall (Actually the firewall is Zone Alarm Pro).  But if I close I.E. then restart it, it will connect to the internet.   The next time you have the problem, check the status of your firewall.

Another issue, if you are using a firewall other than the built in Windows XP firewall, make sure the Windows XP firewall is turned off.  If both firewalls are on there can be problems.

Thanks for your help. I do have an ethernet connection and am running a Dell Dimension 4600i. I have the Win Firewall blocked and am using ZA Firewall. I have restored my system to a much earlier date with no change. It is not until several hours of inactivity that I find I must reboot to connect to websites. During the time I can't connect my indicators show a normal connected local area network connection ( Roadrunner). This is a relatively minor problem, but enough to bug me.
