The reason I asked is because mcvsescn.exe sounds a lot like "McAfee VirusScan." I was going to suggest you completely uninstall McAfee, reboot, and then reinstall by taking the following steps:
1 Click Start - Set Program Access and Defaults - Change or Remove Programs.
2. Uninstall all McAfee applications. Reboot if prompted to do so.
3. Go to C:/Program Files and delete any remaining McAfee files and folders.
4. Click Start - Run and type in regedit and click OK.
5. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Software. Delete all McAfee entries.
6. Reboot
7. Reinstall McAfee.
But I'm not sure what your defragmenting problem is. It could be something more than just McAfee.
Have you tried doing a System Restore to a date before you had this problem?
Someone from the Hard Drive forum suggested uninstalling McAfee as well. However, as I stated to them, I will hold off on that until tonight when my BF can do it. Otherwise I am bound to mess things up further.
The problem has been going on for some time now. I have tried various times, through various forums (never Dell) to fix it. However, the suggestions I received either did not help or were too confusing for me to follow. And to be honest, I have tried so many different things over time that I can not even remember what all I have tried.
So the problem is still here.
Then shortly after the McAfee prob (I guess everyone has decided that is what mcvsescn.exe is) I alsp started having problems with my Firefox browser. I would be cruisin' along just fine. Everything is working, when all of a sudden I get the Netscape Quality Feedback Agent pop-up box. (BTW... Do they even really get the info when you send the error report? I've only sent it a dozen times or so. LOL)
Once that pop-up comes everything freezes up and then all of my windows automatically close.
Over the past week I would get that pop-up more and more often. But last night it got worse. The Netscape pop-up now comes up as soon as I open the Firefox window. So I can not even use that browser anymore, it just locks up right away. I am having to use Netscape as I.E. doesn't seem to want to work for me either. It locks up every now and then.
I do not know if the problems are all linked. I only assume that they are because things have just become worse over time since I began receiving the corrupt file error message.
Just wanted to let you know that we uninstalled McAfee and purchased another anti-virus program. So I no longer get the McAfee error pop up! Yeah! That fixed "THAT" problem.
However, it did not solve the problem with Firefox as I am still unable to use that browser.
I am thinking that I will probably have to pretty much do the same thing for that. Uninstall it completely and then redownload it and install it from scratch. Would you agree?
If so, is there anyway for me to retrieve my favorites/bookmarks which are saved on that browser? I would hate to loose them all but I can not get the browser to load without that stupid Netscape error reporting pop-up.
And last but not least.... Though we fixed the McAfee error problem, I still can not defrag C: because it still says I have a chkdsk scheduled. Is there a way for me to check if I have it scheduled and unschedule it? I think I may possibly remember scheduling it when I was trying to fix the problem a while back. But how I did, or really if I did, I couldn't say. I was just following suggestions from others and doing everything blindly.

Yes that's probably your best bet. You may still have the installer file on your hard drive. It should be named somewhere along the lines of "Firefox Setup 1.0.7.exe". The version might be an earlier one.
To save your Favorites/Bookmarks, save your profile located here:
C:\Documents and Settings\[User name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
Of course, you want to replace [User Name] with your user name.
Save it somewhere safe. It's a good idea to make a regular backup anyway.
To check scheduled tasks:
Click Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Scheduled Tasks.
to save your favorites in firefox, i would look for instructions in firefox's helpfile..
if you do have "chkdsk" "scheduled", it will run when you reboot your computer.. you will have an option to cancel it, before it begins running (after you have rebooted)..
you should run "chkdsk" occasionally, as part of maintaining your computer..

Chkdsk doesn't run when we rebbot the computer and it is not listed under scheduled tasks. So I am not sure what the problem is with no being able to defrag.
As for Firefox... I'll have to go through all of the files and try to pint point those things that you've mentioned.
if you are getting a message that "chkdsk" is scheduled to run, but it is not running when you reboot, try going to start/my computer, rightclick on "c:', click properties, then "tools", then "error checking".. check both of the boxes there, and "apply" (or "OK")..
you should see a message saying that "chkdsk cannot run, do you want to schedule it? click "yes".. then reboot the computer and see if "chkdsk" runs..

I should add that I have run a virus scan and also used disk cleanup.
I also tried to defrag but was only able to defrag (F:) volume. Whenever I tried to defrag the (C:) volume I would get a pop-up stating that....
Disk defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on Volume (C:)
Please run chkdsk /f
Yet when I run it, not only did it not fix the problem with the corrupt files, but I still can not defrag either.

However, It gave me the following error message
An unspecified error has occured
I tried doing a defrag afterwards, but it still tells me that chkdsk is scheduled.
