corrupt or missing comdlg.dll continuously rebooting
I'll try to keep it short, been working on this problem all weekend!
dimension 8200, p4 2.0, 512mb, win xp
I have mcafee anti virus and mcafee antispy
Sat morning I updated mcafee antispy and was prompted to restart after installation
dell splash comes up and then a blue screen appears for a second
took a few times to read the error
missing or corrupt comdlg32.dll
then the xp splash comes up and starts all over again trying to boot
I did some research and I have boot disks and tried to put a new copy of comdlg.dll
but access was denied to the file. When I use the dell xp cd to boot from I receive another error
about the
txtsetup.sif being corrupt. But I can get to the recovery console with the floppies.
For the time being I'm using an old Compaq 400Mhz with 256mb and I'm running xp on this.
glad I kept it running!
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

Can you (from the Recovery Console) rename comdlg32.dll to comdls32.old ?
Then enter this command line:
copy c:\windows\system32\dllcache\comdlg32.dll c:\windows\system32

I don't think you should have got that "Access Denied" message going by the Recovery Console rules but I guess that's moot. Just try copying the file and maybe it'll just prompt you to overwrite; forget about the ren command line. I don't think it will work either but give it a try. I think you may have a virus; actually a trojan. If you made a reference (McAfee) floppy (or set of floppies) you could run it from A: The command might be something like this:
rescue.exe c:\*.* /R
If you have a virus I don't think a Repair Install will work; having no experience with either, I can't comment.
The one virus I came upon in 'researching' your problem was ymya2; you could go to the system32 directory and do a "dir" command and see if it or something similar is in that folder. I'm really reaching now.
Can anyone help ?
