Counterfeit windows software

I have a 9150 dimension desktop purchased about three months ago. recently I updated windows xp via the microsoft site. The updated 'genuine advantage validation tool' gave me a message indicating that the pre-installed windows xp was counterfeit software and, more importantly, that I may not be able to update it in future.

I have emailed Dell twice about this matter but I have had no response at all from them. Has anyone else had this problem? I find it hard to believe that Dell would supply illegal software but no one is talking. I have contacted Microsoft who referred me to the WGA (Windows genuine Advantage) team. They will follow this matter up but this does not help me in the short term.

Can anyone help?

In the future, by using the Advanced Forum Search on the bottom of this page, you can quite easily find the answer to this often asked question.  Dozens of people have posted about this issue, and the recommendation seems to be to wait for a revised update.
