All I can offer on the AOL issue is to uninstall & reinstall the software. AOL can be quirky and if their support personnel cannot resolve the issue by phone, I should think this suggestion would be worthwhile. That said IMHO, using a normal ISP with a conventional browser would be more preferable if possible in your situation.
Regarding the NAV issue...I don't see what having NAV exempt the compressed files has to do with the TIF directory (since these are not compressed) but you can wipe the directory in DOS. To do so:
Re-Boot to DOS Command Prompt (Press F-8 at Post Beep and choose "Command Prompt Only").
Your Cookies, History and Temporary Internet Files, by default should be in C:\WINDOWS. If not adjust the path to these folders for your computer.
To clear this directory, type the following at the C:\ Prompt followed by pressing "ENTER":
deltree /y tempor~1
If you wish, you can follow up by deleting the History and Cookie directories in the same manner (pressing "Enter" after each command, of course).
deltree /y history
deltree /y cookies
This could take a few minutes, when it's all done, REBOOT the computer. Windows will rebuild these folders the next time you use the internet. You may want to consider defraging your hard drive after returning to Windows.
If NAV continues to give problems, you may consider uninstalling & reinstalling it as well.
thanx for your suggestions - I will delete those files through DOS (I don't know why the note about compressed files was there, but that's what it says in NAV's help section)
the thing about AOL is just odd to me because I have had this version for a long time with no problems; just didn't think it could suddenly change. I do have cable internet and normally just use IE to do everything on the internet... but before I was in this situation my family used AOL (modem) as our ISP, then I moved out, and now I still go into AOL to check my e-mail.
If AOL is the culprit, you can uninstall it and not reinstall . . you can check your email in AOL without using the AOL software. Use IE ( or any other browser ) to check the AOL email
