CPU 100%

Hello all;

I have a unique problem that I hope has a relatively easy answer for a fix. It concerns my CPU usage going to 100% whenever I am trying to load a program or run a game. Whenever I check ctrl+alt+delete, the program or game in question is what is loading the CPU up to max. After ending the process, the CPU goes back to 0 or 2% usage; normal. I am running Windows XP home, have a 2350 with a 2 gig processor, and 256 megs of ram. I have had to do a repair of Windows, and I'm hoping that all that is required is a driver update or the like. All the threads I have checked in the forum concern the CPU staying at 100%. Mine is fine until either loading a program or trying a game, then it maxes out. After shutting off the process, CPU right back to normal. I am still trying to diagnose the problem, however if someone has experienced this, I wouldn't mind a shortcut to getting it fixed. Thanks, Deacon

Presuming you have done an AV scan (preferrably online at Norton.com) and a scan with Adaware I suggest uninstalling/reboot/and reinstalling the offending programs/games. If you haven't done so in a while a defrag may help. The first thing I'd do is run the SFC utility. From Start|Run, Enter:

sfc /scannow(PS note space)

There is a recent patch for WMP9, if that applies to you, which deals with 100% usage; I don't know if that's related to your high usage. Have you run any HW diagnostics ? You may want to run chkdsk /F before a defrag. Lastly, you may want to check all cables and memory. Sorry I can't give anything definite.
