type in: msconfig
click ok
Click Startup tab. You can uncheck just about everything on Startup tab EXCEPT items related to your firewall, antiviral software, mouse and video card. If you're not sure what an item is, the path in the 2nd column may help you decide, or just google the name. Exit msconfig and reboot. Put check in "don't show this again" box that will appear after rebooting.

I respectfully disagree. Dell has been putting an unbelievable amount of bloatware on new systems lately and most of that stuff loads every time the PC boots. Things like Acrobat Assistant, jsched, MusicMatch, Quicktime, Sonic, RealPlayer, etc can all be safely turned off in msconfig.
True, the OP didn't say what processes are running, but if s/he hasn't run msconfig, I'd bet there's a load of junk in the background. And a lot of that stuff is constantly phoning home for updates which can also slow the system down.
Things have gotten so bad, somebody created the "Dell Decrapifier" to remove the bloatware from Dell PCs.
