I experienced similar problems a while ago - NAV 2003 found nothing and I tried almost everything.  On a hunch I set my firewall (ZoneAlarm) to maximum protection and reset the machine, then for some reason NAV found a root-kit trojan was installed on my system - dunno why it didn't find it before-hand though.  After it was removed everything worked fine.

You could try Process Explorer from sysinternals and see if that yields further information (http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml) or you could try TCPView (also from www.sysinternals.com - similar to the built-in NETSTAT, but more visual) to see what else you're connected-to.

Ian.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try them. I have McAfee anti-virus and firewall, both updated but as you suggest I may have to dig deeper. Thanks.

My system Dimension 2300+, Win XP Home ....... is experiencing 98 -100% System Utilization.

Have all current Norton & Stop Sign updates & scan show no virus'.  Using ICF with defaults.

Even disable the Broadband Network connection in case of live intruder.

Yes, SP 1 installed and current on all IE security updates........

The 100% hit is sporadic .... 10 minutes after reboot or 1 day after reboot.

Nonetheless, I'll check all power schemes.

Thanks loads ....

I don't think it's a virus. I tried all sorts of scanners, but found nothing.  I have a Tulip/Topline 501 that's having the same problem.  It's running on Win XP HOME SP1.

We have all sort of notebooks an desktops running on XP HOME, XP PRO and win98, and they are all on a Novell 6 network, but this is the only one that has this problem.

With Process Explorer I can see it's the NTOSKRL.EXE with a tread called "ExQueueWorkItem+0xa2'"  that's using the CPU.

I found and article with Microsoft with this numer: "Q330512", but i can't find a download.

I've solved the problem with my Tulip 501.

In Device Management, I disabled "Battery wich complies with ACPI-management"  (I've tried to translate it from dutch) and within a few seconds the fan stopped blowing and the 'system' process returned to idle (0%).

I don't know what sideaffects it has.

I finally solved this problem after about 100 different tries.

I ran the Dell Resource CD diagnostic routine and that resulted in an update to the software for the integrated network interface controller (NIC) driver. That fixed the problem.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions.
